Note on 1990–2000 NAICS data: BLS reconstructed NAICS-based figures for 1990–2000 from data originally classified under SIC. For a continuous time series, I recommend using SIC through 2000 and NAICS beginning in 2001, similar to the approach used by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA).

QCEW · Jobs & wages by state and industry

Build your own employment dataset

Filter the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages by state, year, industry and ownership, then download exactly the rows you need as a CSV. Annual averages from 1975 to the most recent year published. Thank you to Ted for the inspiration in creating this tool from his many bulk data requests.

Each level is a separate slice of the data. Picking more than one and adding the rows together will double count.

5Specific industries optional

If you leave this blank, you get every industry at the detail levels selected above.

6Ownership

By default, suppressed rows are kept with blank values and suppressed = TRUE. BLS reports these as zeros, which would undercount totals.

About this data

  • Source: BLS Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages, annual averages. These are counts of jobs covered by unemployment insurance, about 95% of U.S. jobs.
  • NAICS vs. SIC: BLS switched industry classification systems in 2001. NAICS-based data is available for 1990 onward; the older SIC-based series covers 1975–2000. The industry codes do not map one-to-one.
  • Suppression: BLS withholds figures that could reveal an individual employer. Establishment counts are still published for those rows.
  • Levels: Domain and supersector are BLS groupings of NAICS sectors, not part of NAICS itself.
